Step Two: Use the Map Only to Identify Location Candidates, Not as Evidence About Individuals

The contents on scanned page 16 of Volume 1 of the Jiajing Wujiang County Gazetteer list “County-Boundary Map” and “Old Map of the County Seat.” The two map titles suggest that further spatial clues may be found, but what has currently been verified is only the contents page. After opening the map pages, it is still necessary to identify the legend, orientation, waterways, and text on the map; the relative positions in a schematic map cannot be directly converted into precise coordinates.

Old genealogy record: Transcribe the original place name, the people concerned, the branch of the family, and the scanned page of the original genealogy.
Hongzhi edition: Consult the main text on administrative history or territory, and record whether a place with the same name appears and what higher-level administrative unit it belonged to.
Jiajing edition: Consult the actual map pages for the county-boundary map or old map of the county seat, record whether a place with the same name can be read, and preserve the map-page location.
Inconsistencies between the two editions: Preserve them side by side by date rather than forcing a choice between them; look for contracts, tomb inscriptions, or other local gazetteers for cross-checking.

For example, if an old genealogy says that someone “lived in Wujiang,” this provides only a broad location clue. Even if a settlement bearing the same surname appears on an old map, that alone cannot establish that it was this person’s ancestral village.
