How to Match Ancestral Place Names to Present-Day Locations

Preserve the historical hierarchy and time period, and avoid matching places based only on identical names.

A guide to organizing information. The examples are fictional demonstrations, not historical cases; please verify conclusions involving people, dates, and lineages against original sources.

Record the Full Place Name as Written

First, transcribe each level exactly as written, such as prefecture, subprefecture, county, township, li, and village, and keep the time context of that passage. Common names, minor place names, and administrative place names may appear together. If the original text is incomplete, do not arbitrarily turn it into a modern address.

Place the Name Back in Its Historical Period

The same place name may have referred to different areas in different periods. First consult local gazetteer catalogs, administrative history, and maps close to the period of the genealogy text, then compare them with modern administrative divisions. This comparison is part of the research process; before verification, do not state it as a definite ancestral-place identification.

Cross-Check with Nearby Clues

Rivers, mountain names, ancestral halls, neighboring villages, and market towns can often help distinguish places with the same name. Look for at least two types of independent clues; straight-line distance on a map cannot by itself prove a migration relationship.

Keep Questions Open When Asking Family Members

Do not first tell elders a presumed answer. You can ask, “How was this place name pronounced in the past?”, “Were there any rivers or markets nearby?”, or “Who used this name?” Preserve differing accounts, note the time and the person who provided them, and wait for original documents or local materials to provide further evidence.
