Elder Interview Outline: Preserving Family Memory Through Specific Experiences
Focus on one scene at a time and let elders speak at their own pace.

Agree on the Topic and Scope of Use First
Before the interview, explain how the recording will be used, who may listen to it, what will not be made public, and that the speaker may pause or decline to answer at any time. Start with relaxed, familiar everyday topics, and do not turn the interview into a line-by-line interrogation.
Use Open-Ended Questions to Recreate the Scene
You can begin with questions such as “Where were you living at the time,” “What was a typical day like,” and “Who did you meet when you first arrived in the new place?” Then follow up on specific people, objects, actions, and time periods. Do not put your own interpretation into the question and ask the other person to confirm it.
How to Follow Up on Unclear Dates
Do not require an immediate Gregorian calendar year. You can ask whether it happened before or after starting school, getting married, or a particular move, and then check against family letters, photo inscriptions, and other materials. When memories and documents do not match, preserve both pieces of information side by side.
Ask the Speaker to Confirm Afterward
First prepare a brief summary and ask the speaker to confirm names, the sequence of events, and the parts that may be made public. Editing the text must not add dialogue or experiences that were not mentioned. Keep the recording timestamps so you can return directly to the relevant passages in the future.
